Note: Read and complete Step 1 below before you
read the directions for Step 2, and don't move on to Step 3 until you're done
with Step 2.
Step 1: Think about the essay you’ve written so far
for Essay #1, the personal essay assignment. In your notebook, without looking
at your essay or any other notes related to it, try to sum up what you think is
the most essential idea in the essay, or one of the most essential ideas, in one
fairly concise sentence.
Step 2: Now clear your mind, and try to sum up the
same idea (roughly) in a longer, more complex sentence or two. Feel free to
bring in any nuances that you felt you had to leave out in your first attempt.
Step 3: Now rewrite the first sentence, thinking
about details that you may have added in the second, longer sentence. Feel free
to add more detail, but try to keep the sentence concise. The final sentence
can be longer than the first one you wrote, but should be shorter than the
second.
Once you've written these three sentences, you can spend the
rest of the period working on developing and revising your draft of Essay #1.
